Hoops: A Graphic Novel
Matt Tavares

Another great book from the Maud Hart Lovelace Nominees for this year is Hoops: A Graphic Novel by Matt Tavares. This book is based on the true story of Indiana’s Wilkins Regional High School girls’ basketball team fighting for gender equality rights after the inception of Title IX in 1972. Follow this team as they travel from game to game in Winnie, a borrowed RV, playing in their homemade uniforms with numbers created with electrical tape.

You Were Made for This World: Celebrated Indigenous Voices Speak to Young People

edited by Stephanie Sinclair and Sara Sinclair
This collection draws you in with a breathtaking cover and beautiful artwork that accompanies each entry. This volume, edited by Stephanie Sinclair and Sara Sinclair, was created as a response to continue on a journey of healing and learning more about their father’s Indigenous family to foster connection and teach their children about their rich history and culture. As the foreword by Mazina Giixhik-iban declares, "Diversity is natural and not something that needs to be overcome. It need not threaten the unity of humanity.” Explore this collection with forty Indigenous voices sharing their letters to young people presented as a “medicine bundle” with sections on traditional medicine; water, tobacco, cedar, sweetgrass, and sage.

Sisters in the Wind
Angeline Bouley

book coverAngeline Bouley’s books tell engrossing, fast paced stories with appealing main characters. They’re also filled with information about Ojibwe life and history.

In Sisters in the Wind, Lucy has been both on the run and in the foster care system since the death of her father five years earlier. As compelling as the earlier books, this one explores abuses in that system and their effects on the young people involved in it.

The books may be read in any order, and characters move from one to the next.

As good and important as the books are, my favorite part is that they appealed to me, my daughter, and granddaughter. They gave us a shared experience as we explored them in our own little book group, sharing insights and reactions.

The books are recommended for young adult age 14 and up.
