The Eyes & the Impossible
Dave Eggers

I picked this up as an audiobook due to the beautiful cover and did not realize until after I was finished that it won the prestigious Newbery Prize in 2024, a well-deserved win in my opinion. The reader experiences living wild in a city park through the viewpoint of a stray dog. Johannes is “the Eyes” of the bustling park, meaning he keeps tabs on all the activities taking place and reports his findings daily to the wise bison. Alongside Johannes are several other animal inhabitants who help him keep track of the various happenings and maintain balance, ensuring the humans respect nature. Because of his speed and cunning, Johannes is rarely noticed by visitors until he rescues a drowning toddler, making him a local celebrity and alerting the attention of animal control to his presence. With Johannes' life changing drastically, he will need the help of all his friends, and a few goats, to remain free. This book offers a unique perspective and humor that will delight readers of many ages.

Whale Eyes
James Robinson

We didn’t go to Winter Institute, one of our favorite conferences for booksellers, this year, but we heard afterwards that Whale Eyes was one of the buzz books. So of course, I needed to learn what made the book so outstanding! Whale Eyes is James Robinson’s memoir, and it relates growing up with “strabismus, a condition of eye misalignment that causes difficulties tracking objects, depth perception, and reading.” Interactive artwork throughout illustrates how James perceives the world around him. The first, and longer, part of the book relates James’ childhood and school days. The second section describes how he became a maker of documentaries, and the sensibilities which inform that work. This important book is for age 10 through adult. It would be a great book to read and discuss with kids!
