If you like stories that combine horror, sci-fi, and creepy moments, we’ve got the perfect book for you!
Justin Holley was in the store for conversation and to sign his latest book, Unseen Gods, which is brand new—it was released on October 14!
After winning an old casefile at auction outlining the disappearance of a hunting party back in the nineties, Kory and his pregnant wife invite their friend and mentor, Professor Frank Colista, and others, for a casual long weekend of exploring the mystery site with very little hope of finding anyone or anything. When one of their group disappears without a trace, Kory and Colista fear the past may repeat itself. Then the deaths start. As a savage, unexpected snowstorm sets in, the disappearances and ungodly sightings of the deceased ramp up, and an old woman rambles about end-of-days and sacrifice.
Reading Unseen Gods is the perfect way to get ready for the shadow side of Halloween!

Anne-Marie Erickson In the Evening, We’ll Dance
This touching and beautifully written memoir was recommended to us by Will Weaver. He says, “Startlingly good, this memoir is powered by grief, memory, and married love distilled to its essence, which is wordlessness. Poetic, literary, yet always accessible, it is certain to find a wide audience.”
Andrew DeYoung Stay Away from Him
Complex characters and narrative tension drive this domestic thriller by the author of The Day He Never Came Home.
William Kent Krueger August 29
William Kent Krueger’s new Cork O’Connor book, Apostle's Cove, is out September 2—but he got permission from his publisher to visit a few stores, including ours, before that date!
We met in the Event Room, 1104 Park Ave. S. at 5:00 on August 29. Kent spoke and signed and personalized his books.
The Third Annual Reading Road Trip August 1–31
We had so much fun the first two years that we did another Up North Reading Road Trip! Our readers gasssed up the car and grabbed their friends or book group members to visit these five great bookstores: Beagle and Wolf Books & Bindery, Big Pine Books, Bluebird Books, Cherry Street Books, and Four Pines. Each store had special events and surprises. Participants got a passport at their first stop, had it stamped at each store, and left it at the last store visited. It went into a drawing for a fabulous gift basket.
“Find Waldo in Park Rapids” is back again in July!
A 6" Waldo standee hid in each of 20 different places in Park Rapids this month. When players found Waldo at participating locations, they got cards stamped/signed. The first 125 players who collect store stamps/signatures from at least ten different businesses and turned their passports in to the bookstore received a sticker and a $1 Off coupon for a Waldo book. Players who collect at least eighteen stamps/signatures also entered into a drawing for the grand prize.
Here are the participating businesses. Most, but not all, are located downtown.

Book Launch for Marty Leistikow July 26
Local resident Marty Leistikow has written a book and we celebrated with a book launch on July 26. We were happy to congratulate her and hear the story of how the book came to be. Signed copies were available to purchase.
Summer wouldn’t be complete with a visit from Frank Weber. Frank is a forensic pathologist whose books are drawn on actual cases he’s worked on in Minnesota. Our customers got to ask Frank about his day job, and could get a signed copy of his latest thriller, The Sun.
Farewell to our friend! Thursday, July 3
We hosted a farewell party for our longtime staffer Cascade in the Addition of the bookstore.
Cascade has worked for us in a number of capacities (intern, Wenda (Waldo character), reviewer, bookseller, and so much more!) She’s heading to Madison to attend grad school for Library Science. It’s been our great pleasure to have been part of Cascade’s journey. We’re proud of her and excited for her future!

Kent Nerburn,
speaking and signing June 5
We were thrilled to welcome Kent Nerburn back to Beagle and Wolf Books with his new book, Lone Dog Road! Nerburn’s writings have focused on the Native American people with whom he has lived and worked for 30 years. Native leaders like Leonard Peltier and Winona LaDuke have named him “one of the few American writers who can successfully bridge the gap between Native and non-Native cultures.” Lakota author and elder Joseph Marshall has called his work "a sensitive, insightful glimpse into a Lakota soul, a feat unattainable by most non-Native writers."
In Lone Dog Road, Nerburn carries his skill of empathic storytelling further by bringing together a rich tapestry of people from different races and cultures who speak in their own individual voices to tell a compelling road story of two young Lakota boys, ages 11 and 6, who are fleeing from a government agent who has been sent to take the younger boy to an Indian boarding school.
Jeff Chu event at the Armory May 31
Jeff Chu was in Park Rapids as part of a national tour with Good Soil. We were thrilled to have been asked to sell books after Jeff’s talk.

Heather Bouwman returned to Beagle and Wolf with her latest book, Scattergood, which brings young readers torural Iowa in 1941, where twelve-year-old Peggy’s quiet life is turned upside down by refugee arrivals, first love, and a heartbreaking diagnosis.

Jan D Payne lived in the Four Corners area of Navajoland, graduating from Shiprock High School before leaving for college and medical school. She
attempts to reflect in her fictional Marin Sinclair book series, centered in Dinétah, the high regard she holds for the land and the people of the Navajo Nation.
Here was our chance to meet the author behind Rabbit Moon, hear about the inspiration behind the story, and get our books personally signed.
Karen Babine May 17
Book Launch of The Allure of Elsewhere
We welcomed Nevis native Karen Babine home and celebrated the release of her newest book!
In her mid-thirties and happily single, Karen hitches up her tiny Scamp camper and sets out with her two unenthusiastic cats, Galway and Maeve, on a journey from her home in Minnesota to Nova Scotia to explore the place where her French-Acadian ancestors settled in North America some four centuries ago.
Capturing the joy, freedom, and powerful pull of the open road, The Allure of Elsewhere is about the stories we’re told, the stories we tell, and the way those stories make us who we are, often in surprising ways. Intimate, curious, and candid, written with wry wit and warmth, this is a courageous and inspiring memoir.
This was a scoop for us as the official release date of Karen’s book was May 20!
Allen Eskens May 1
Allen Eskens, a Minnesota author with many fans at the store, was with us to talk about his new book, The Quiet Librarian. (Note that it’s a rare weekday event.)
Here’s Lee’s review:
This is really, really good … one of those “I could not put it down” books.
Hana Babic is a middle-aged librarian in Minnesota who wants to be able to live without disturbance. She appears a bit dowdy, with her worn cardigan sweaters and long skirts, and she performs her work without fanfare.
When she learns that her best friend has been murdered, she knows that danger is coming from their shared past as young militia members fighting with the Bosniak forces against the Serbs in the early 1990s. In fact, she was not just a soldier: She was the much-feared Night Mora, with a huge bounty on her head. Now, she must leave the quiet librarian behind.
This is an outstanding novel of historical fiction, as the chapters alternate between Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Minnesota. And it is also an excellent mystery and thriller.
Independent Bookstore Day April 26, 9:00 to 5:00
We love Independent Bookstore Day! Indies across the country all celebrate, each in their own way. We always celebrate the day as the birthday of Beagle and Wolf Books & Bindery (ten years since we combined Sister Wolf Books and Beagle Books and Bindery!)
This year, we’ll be celebrating another birthday as well—Jen’s 50th!!! (And we have permission to say so.) Stop in to wish her well, have a birthday cupcake, and check out what else is going on in the store that day!
Here’s what we did at Beagle and Wolf:
Regional Authors Signings
Two authors from our area signed copies of their new books!
Janet Preus signed copies of The Thirteenth Crime, which came out in January.
It’s a ghost story based on historical information, with perhaps some
Embellishments.
Selina Li Bi signed copies of Sunlight Playing Over a Mountain, which will be
released
early this month. Selina’s magical debut perfectly portrays the pain of growing up in aless-than-magical world and introduces a remarkable new voice in young adult fiction.

Spring Retreat April 12
Early spring weather in Minnesota is so unpredictable! Will it rain? snow? will the driveway be frozen or muddy? We like to side-step all the weather unknowns and schedule a day inside, talking about books.
Our theme was "Who Am I, Really?” We each read the same two books ahead of time: The Hidden Life of Cecily Larson by Ellen Baker, and Wintering by Katherine May.
The Hidden Life of Cecily Larson moves from present day Minnesota, when Cecily is the widow of a beloved town doctor and matriarch to four generations of her own family, and the 1930s, when Cecily is a seven-year-old orphan sold to a traveling circus. In Wintering, Katherine May examines the reality of the cold times in our lives, showing that wintering can’t be avoided, but need not be feared.
14th Annual Chili Challenge March 4
A record-breaking $18,000 was raised to support the important work of the Hubbard County Food Shelf. Our own Chef Tom was there with Beagle and Wolf’s chili—Fahrenheit 451.
Paper Bag Princess Day March 1
We LOVE The Paperback Princess, Robert Munsch’s classic book for girls about courage, self-reliance, and autonomy. Jen hosted a special storytime featuring The Paperback Princess.
Princess Elizabeth knows she doesn’t need a prince to save her—and that being a hero can take many different forms.
For fun, here’s author Munsch telling the story of The Paper Bag Princess to his daughter and granddaughter.
Report from Afternoon In
A lively group of readers joined us on January 19. Jen and Sally introduced the group to 20 books we think would be good for book group discussion or individual reading. The line-up is pictured here. Jen and Sally will be shared their reviews of the books in our February and March newsletters.
